No matter how much we humans, as imperfect beings, are heartbroken at the death of our neighbours, it is unfortunately very difficult to help them.
No matter how deeply we wish and shed tears for the resuscitation of our dying relatives, as we all know, we cannot bring them back from the dead. The thought is a noble but imperfect act of mercy that cannot be carried out.
It is the act of perfect compassion that we practise and eventually awaken to true wisdom. And that is how we live a full life.

From "Tannishou", a collection of sayings by Shinran (a 13th-century Buddhist monk).
